The March of Dimes, by Dennis Gomer

October 12, 2012

The March of Dimes Foundation is a nonprofit devoted to helping pregnant mothers carry to full term and deliver healthy babies. To do so, the group investigates the causes of health threats to babies. The program was established by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who wanted an organization focused on fighting polio, but the focus shifted to premature birth and birth defects after Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Albert Sabin developed an effective vaccine for polio.

Since 2003, the March of Dimes’ fight to save babies manifests through the Prematurity Campaign. The campaign tackles the serious issues of premature births, which have increased by 36 percent over the past 25 years. Premature birth has many devastating effects, and it is the No. 1 killer of newborns. Babies born early have a higher risk of health problems and disabilities. Through the campaign and educational efforts, the March of Dimes hopes to counter this trend of premature births.
